The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Oct. 20 launched a Kidney Care National Plan that puts finding kidney disease earlier at the top of its goals. HHS estimates that kidney disease affects 37 million American adults, and most of them do not know it.
That silence is the core problem. Kidney disease often causes no symptoms until significant damage has occurred, so many people learn about it late, when treatment options are narrower. HHS says late diagnosis limits chances to slow the disease.
