Herschel Walker’s campaign fires political director amid allegations of paying for an abortion

Herschel Walker’s campaign fired its political director amid the fallout after reports broke that the Republican Senate nominee in Georgia paid for a girlfriend’s abortion in 2009, CNN reported.

The campaign has parted ways with Taylor Crowe, who previously worked on former Senator David Perdue’s failed primary challenge against incumbent Republican Governor Brian Kemp.

Former president Donald Trump supported both Mr Walker and Mr Perdue’s campaign because of his criticism that Mr Kemp refused to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

Recent polls show Mr Walker now trails Democratic incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock since the explosive allegations about him paying for his girlfriend’s abortion came to light. The former University of Georgia running back had previously said he opposes abortion and does not support support any exceptions for rape, incest or the life of the mother.

Mr Walker responded to the allegations waged agaisnt him during an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Thursday.

“I wasn’t perfect. I had my problems with mental health…I have a new life. I’ve been moving forward,” he said. “If that had happened, I would have said it, because there’s nothing to be ashamed of there. You know, people have done that, but I know nothing about it.”

The Independent has contacted Mr Walker for further comment on the allegations waged against him.

Mr Walker and Mr Warnock will square off in their only planned debate a week from today in Savannah. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the race as a “toss-up.”
