The US Navy is considering renaming a new Ford -class aircraft carrier that was originally designated to honour Black World War II hero Doris Miller.
Sources report that Pentagon officials have discussed naming the vessel after Donald Trump , which would mark an unprecedented move for a sitting president .
Under the reported proposal, Miller's name would be transferred to another ship while the Navy supports posthumously awarding him the Medal of Honor.
Miller's family welcomed the Medal of Honor recommendation but revealed they had not been informed of the potential name change.
The developments coincide with directives from Trump instructing the Navy to modify technical specifications on its new class of aircraft carriers.
