A postal worker has been hailed a hero after she helped save a pensioner's life after the woman was found trapped in her home, on the floor, for four days.
Kayla Berridge realised the post had been piling up for four days outside a woman's home in New Market, New Hampshire, US.
She says she sometimes had a chat with the woman, in her 80s, and started to become concerned on January 27.
Kayla says she had a gut feeling that she ought to call for a wellness check on the home.
Her decision was proven to be the right one as Newmarket Police Department found that the woman had been trapped on the floor of her bedroom for at least three days.
Police Lt Wayne Stevens told CNN the first detective to arrive could barely hear the woman calling for help as he knocked on the door.
Lt Stevens pulled up to the house with another officer and they were able to get in.
The officers then found the woman on the floor of her bedroom, under items including artwork and frames.
Police believe she had tried to grab her bed for support, but the items crashed down on her.
The woman was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with hypothermia and dehydration.
She is still in the hospital as of Friday, but her family told the police she is stable.
Kayla said during her four years as a mail carrier, she has never had to call for a wellness check.
She added that the signs she looks for are if mail is piling up, there is no outgoing mail, or a car is left parked in the drive consistently.
Kayla said: "Newmarket is a great little town. Everyone has each other's backs."
Lt Stevens said this isn't the first time the department has conducted a wellness check called in by a postal carrier.
He added: "Without a doubt, she saved this lady's life.
"That's part of being a letter carrier in a small town and taking your job to the next level. She did a great job."
