Hero East Lothian stranger rescues residents as fire rips through block of flats

An East Lothian local has praised the 'hero' who saved a number of residents' lives after a fire tore through a block of flats on Saturday night

The resident, who doesn't want to be named, was ushered out of the smoke filled flat in Musselburgh with her partner after a kind stranger ran in to help people escape.

The unknown hero also guided an elderly woman who was trapped and disorientated in the property as the blaze tore on.

The local, who lives in the block of flats ,also praised staff at the nearby Ship Inn, a pub across the road who rushed to the residents' assistance as they were evacuated.

Kind pub staff provided shelter, phone chargers, food and drinks for the locals who were shaken up after escaping the blaze.

One man was reportedly rushed to hospital in an ambulance after receiving first aid from fire fighters on the scene.

His condition is currently unknown but the Scottish Ambulance Service have been contacted for an update.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, the resident said: "The property we live in over the road caught fire and we all had to evacuate suddenly, we were all stood outside in our pyjamas.

"The whole block were in shock, some of us were barely dressed whilst others were seriously injured. The staff of The Ship Inn came running over as soon as they saw what was going on, with water, tea and whisky for those who needed it.

"When my partner and I were getting out we were helped by a random fella who had been driving past and ran in to get everyone out.

"He was literally an angel as he guided us through the smoke and went back in for our elderly neighbour who couldn't hear the fire alarm. True hero material.

"We went over to the Ship Inn to get out of the cold whilst the brave folks of the fire service got our building sorted.

"The staff also brought us chargers, blankets and food. They let us in with all our animals and gave them all water and kept making sure if they were ok.

"The staff were absolutely brilliant and when we mentioned that our wallets and purses were still in the building they said 'don't worry about it' and told us to stay as long as we needed.

"I speak for everyone in the block when I say a massive THANK YOU, to the fire service, to the kind passers by who asked if we were OK, and especially to the amazing staff of The Ship Inn who took us in during a horrific time.

"Every single person who was working at The Ship Inn today made me feel so safe and calm, and every one of us from the building who came in for warmth will be saying an absolutely massive THANK YOU to you all for being such amazing people."

The resident continued: "Every flats got some smoke damage and there's nine flats in the building, not entirely sure on numbers as some folks have got boyfriends/girlfriends who come stay occasionally so it tends to fluctuate a bit.

"Fire brigade was rang at 5:30, we'd been smelling smoke for about 10 minutes before that but we've just got a new oven and I was baking so I assumed it was that. We're not sure what started it but the poor bloke whose flat it was was in a very bad way.

"The fire brigade gave first aid on the scene and when we were at The Ship Inn our neighbour said he'd been taken in an ambulance.

"Both him and the flat were in a bad way, I only caught a glimpse cause I didn't want to crowd him as he was being treated."
