Héritier Lumumba, Leon Davis and Andrew Krakouer to cut all ties with Collingwood over systemic racism dialogue

Former Collingwood player Héritier Lumumba says he, Leon Davis and Andrew Krakouer have terminated all communications with the Collingwood Football Club.

The former teammates had been in 15 months of dialogue with the club to address a string of racist incidents documented in the Do Better report published in 2021.

"It is our firm belief that the Collingwood Football Club has no intention of acting in good faith to achieve a just outcome for past players who have experienced racism at the Club," Lumumba wrote on Twitter.

The Do Better report, published in 2021, found the AFL club had been guilty of systemic racism.

Citing evidence provided by staff, players, ex-players and supporters, the independent review found that the Magpies' response to racist incidents was "at best ineffective, or at worst exacerbated by the impact of the racist incidents".

Former club president Eddie McGuire famously fronted a press conference addressing the Do Better report by calling it an "historic and proud day" for the club, before later stepping down.

The report contained 18 recommendations for addressing the club's culture, all of which Collingwood agreed to implement.

One of these was to "develop a strategy to address and reconcile past acts of racism" that did not punish those who spoke out.

Just last month, the club released a 12-month review of the steps taken to address the report, noting that "significant and genuine progress has been made across almost all of the recommendations".

Lumumba's tweet, however, shows that the trio of former players feel differently.

Lumumba, who played 10 seasons at Collingwood, has previously spoken at length to the ABC about his time at the club, including when he publicly called out McGuire for racist remarks directed at Indigenous player Adam Goodes.

He has also opened up about the racist nicknames he was given, and the fear that speaking out would mean he would lose his spot at the club.

Lumumba said he was subsequently made to feel like a "pariah", and actively undermined by his club.

Collingwood, Davis and Krakouer are yet to comment.
