Here's What Chipmakers Have In Mind For The Tech World In 2023

LAS VEGAS — Chipmakers are making their presence felt at the CES 2023 tech show, showing off the enabling technologies for high-end PCs, virtual and augmented reality headsets, advanced electric vehicles and artificial intelligence.

Late Wednesday, Advanced Micro Devices introduced new processors spanning notebook computers and artificial intelligence data centers.

During the opening keynote at the CES 2023 tech conference, AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su shared the stage with executives from hardware partners HP, Intuitive Surgical, Lenovo, Magic Leap and Microsoft. They discussed working with AMD to create products ranging from gaming notebooks and mixed reality headsets to surgical-assist robots.

Meanwhile, Su said AMD is focused on infusing AI capabilities into its semiconductor products.

"AI is truly the most important megatrend for the future of tech," Su said. "The full potential of AI though can only be realized when it is available across a range of devices from intelligent endpoints on the edge (of networks) to the (internet) cloud."

CES 2023: New Flagship Processor

To fulfill that AI vision, there needs to be multiple compute engines, including central processing units, graphics processing units and adaptive accelerators, she said.

"We are one of the only companies in the world that has all of these engines," Su said.

During her CES 2023 speech, Su introduced the company's latest flagship notebook processor. The AMD Ryzen 7040 Series mobile processors will include artificial intelligence technology called Ryzen AI. The chip will be available in notebooks starting in March.

AMD's Su also previewed a new artificial intelligence chip for data centers. The AMD Instinct MI300 is the first data center chip to combine a CPU and a GPU for better performance and energy efficiency. Further, AMD plans to bring the product to market in the second half of the year.

Intel Trots Out Its New Chips

On Tuesday, ahead of CES 2023, rival Intel debuted its latest notebook chips, the 13th Gen Intel Core mobile processor family. All told, Intel introduced 32 different versions of the new processor. Also, Intel plans to launch its newest data center processors on Jan. 10. They include the 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm was at CES 2023 touting its wireless chips and mobile processors for devices beyond its smartphone core. Those devices include electric vehicles and augmented and virtual reality goggles.

At a Sony news conference late Wednesday, Qualcomm Chief Executive Cristiano Amon gushed about his company's work with new EV company Sony Honda Mobility. The joint venture of Sony and Honda Motor announced an Afeela car brand at CES 2023. Further, the firm expects to take orders for its electric vehicles in the first half of 2025, with deliveries beginning in spring 2026.

"We are on a mission to make everything connected and intelligent," Amon said. "Sony Honda Mobility really understands the potential of this technology."

Qualcomm is providing its Snapdragon Digital Chassis for Afeela cars. That includes chips for advanced driver assistance systems, wireless connectivity and infotainment systems.
