Kansas City Chiefs fans probably remember Jerrion Ealy’s rookie season for the number of times he was released and re-signed to the practice squad.
Over the past weekend, Ealy had the honor of being one of four eligible veteran players to participate in the team’s rookie minicamp. As a result, he got a chance to show head coach Andy Reid and the rest of the coaching staff just how much he’d progressed since his first season.
Over the weekend he showed off his speed, versatility and mastery of the offense.
“He can kind of do a lot of things for you from return game to wide receiver to running back,” Reid said of Ealy. “He did wide receiver the latter part of last year, so (he’s) real smart (and) quick. He’s not the biggest guy, but he knows how to play the game.”
Last year, Ealy focused on special teams and learning the receiver position. During this rookie minicamp, however, Ealy was used as a running back. Reid said that for the time being the team anticipates using him as a running back, but they have the option to move him around to various spots.
The more you can do, the better chances you have of making the 53-man roster or practice squad in Kansas City. Ealy’s ability to contribute as a return specialist and coverage player, and also as an offensive weapon, could be key to him landing a spot with the Chiefs again.
