Back in May, Valve revealed the six Dota 2 teams that were receiving direct invites to The International 2024. The teams are Team Spirit, Xtreme Gaming, Team Falcons, Team Liquid, Gaimin Gladiators, and BetBoom Teams. For the rest of the spots, they were to be taken from the regional qualifiers.
That's exactly what happened. For the month of June, the best Dota 2 teams around the world duked it out to secure a place in this year's TI. It's basically been said and done and we now have the rest of the teams competing. Today we're taking a quick look at the results and our thoughts on it.
North America
Team Qualified: nouns
This region has been all about Shopify Rebellion or which team Artour "Arteezy" Babaev was playing. As such, there was an expectation that the team would once again get that one slot. The excitement went even higher when it was announced that Ivan "MinD_ContRoL" Ivanov was joining the team.
Shopify almost had it in the bag after defeating nouns in the Upper Bracket Final. However, nouns would come back strong and sweep Shopify to head to TI.
South America
Teams Qualified: HEROIC; beastcoast
Despite only joining the Dota 2 competitive scene this year, HEROIC was unstoppable in the regional qualifiers and pretty much swept every opponent they faced. Meanwhile, beastcoast just had enough juice to edged out BOOM Esports and get the second spot.
China
Teams Qualified: Team Zero; G2 x iG
China has always been an interesting region to follow since it has arguably some of the best Dota 2 teams in the world. So there was a lot of pressure especially for the established teams. The results were surprising in the sense that the teams who obtained the spots didn't have an all-Chinese roster. G2 x iG for example had mainly Malaysians with Team Zero bringing in a player from Singapore.
Southeast Asia
Teams Qualified: Talon Esports; Aurora
In this region, it has mainly been teams from the Philippines. However, that seems to have ended. Talon Esports had a strong performance and dominated opponents. The second spot meanwhile went to Aurora who only lost to Talon during the regional qualifiers.
Eastern Europe
Team Qualified: 1win
This region also had a lot of good teams with most fans probably hoping that Virtus.pro would once again return to the world stage. Surprisingly, it was 1win who earned that chance. This was surprising since the team had only joined the competitive scene just this February.
Western Europe
Teams Qualified: Entity; Tundra Esports
Aside from China, Western Europe also has some of the best Dota 2 teams in the world. As such, the regional qualifiers were exciting. There was Nigma Galaxy for example, along with the like of OG and Team Secret. After days of competition, it was Entity and Tundra Esports who won and making a return to TI.
What about you? Which team are you supporting for TI 2024?
