If the New England Patriots suddenly become sellers before the trade deadline, one of the names on that list probably won’t be quarterback Mac Jones.
Per The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, the Patriots have not received any trade calls for the third-year quarterback.
Granted, it was always a long-shot option for the team to trade Jones at all considering they aren’t comfortable with the options behind him. Bailey Zappe was originally cut before being re-signed after training camp, and Malik Cunningham was waived and re-signed to the practice squad nearly a week ago.
Meanwhile, Will Grier is playing on his fourth team in his fifth season as an NFL quarterback.
Moving on from Jones at this point would have been a decision to tank the football team into the ground. That might be the right move at this point considering the Patriots are sitting at 2-6 without a prayer of coming back and competing in the AFC East division.
But it’s hard to imagine coach Bill Belichick setting the team up for failure the rest of the way when even his own future might not be secure. The Patriots are going to try to win as many games as possible this season, and their best chance of doing that is with Jones under center.
