If you consider yourself an avid ChatGPT user, then chances are you’ve started and continued a bunch of chats every time you interact with OpenAI’s signature AI chatbot.
Users put the AI to work by asking it to assist with professional duties, school tasks, fitness advice, recipes, etc. And we’re sure you’ve just had a few general and complex conversations with the chatbot from time to time, so see just how intelligent it’s reported to be. Now, when you’re ready to clear out all those chats for privacy reasons or just want to clear them all out just to keep your ChatGPT sidebar clean, we’re here to help you do just that.
Here are all the necessary steps you need to take if you’re ready to wipe out your ChatGPT chat history and stop the AI chatbot from remembering key details about you from the past.
This is how you can delete your ChatGPT history on desktop and mobile

ChatGPT lets you delete a single conversation or clear them all at once. Apply these steps to getting rid of a single chat on desktop and mobile:
- Open ChatGPT in your browser or through the mobile app
- Make sure your sidebar is open to see Your Chats (you can open it on desktop by clicking on the icon in the top left corner, and open it on the mobile app by tapping on the two lines in the top left corner)
- On desktop, hover over an individual chat to make the three dots at the end of it appear. On the mobile app, tap and hold your finger on a single chat to make the Delete option appear
- On desktop and mobile, click on the three dots, click Delete, then click Delete again to confirm
- The chat will immediately disappear from your chat history
Now, if you’re looking to get rid of all your ChatGPT chats at once, follow the next set of steps:
- Click or tap on your profile/name in the bottom left corner of your screen
- On desktop, click on Settings, then go to Data Controls. On mobile, go straight to Data Controls
- Once inside Data Controls, find Delete all chats and click on the Delete all option next to it to confirm
- All your previous chats will immediately disappear from your chat history
Keep ChatGPT from remembering personal details — here’s how

We’re sure you’ve noticed that a notification pops up whenever you choose to delete a chat. That message lets you know the conversation will be permanently deleted and notifies you that you can enter the “Settings” tab to delete any memories that may have been saved during that chat session.
Next up are all the tips you need to know about keeping ChatGPT from saving and bringing up any details about you in future chats:
- Click or tap on your profile/name in the bottom left corner of your screen
- On desktop, click on Settings, then go to Personalization. On mobile, go straight to Personalization
- Once inside the Personalization tab, scroll down to the Memory section
- Toggle off the Reference saved memories switch (you can also toggle off the Reference chat history switch if you don’t want ChatGPT to bring up details from previous chats, too)
Bottom line
Clearing your chat history can be useful for several reasons. If you share a device, it helps prevent others from seeing your conversations. It’s also smart to delete drafts or prompts that contain sensitive or confidential information. And if you’d rather ChatGPT not retain details about you for future conversations, clearing past chats can help ensure earlier prompts don’t resurface later.
You may also want to use the Temporary Chat feature. To enable it, start a new chat, hover over the speech bubble icon in the top right corner and click or tap to turn Temporary Chat on. While these conversations may be stored for up to 30 days, they won’t appear in your chat history and ChatGPT won’t retain details from them for future chats. It’s a simple step that can add an extra layer of privacy.
