The 95th Oscars will air on Sunday, March 12. Is your favorite going to walk away with a trophy? Well, is your favorite “Everything Everywhere All at Once” or “Brendan Fraser”?
While anything could happen when the envelope is opened, this year’s Oscar race has had a feeling of predetermination, as few key titles and names, like those listed above, have largely swept Oscar prognosticators like the Screen Writers Guild and the Independent Spirit Awards.
But even if this year is seemingly less unpredictable (and perhaps, therefore, a bit less fun) than normal, it’s still an opportunity for film fans to ponder the history of this strange, and often frustrating award, and what it all means, from which Oscar-winning film is the best of all time to the most egregious snubs.
Now, film buffs and data nerds have a new thing they can argue over and obsess about, as a new study, commissioned by Onlinecasinos.co.uk and reported on by StudyFinds, has broken down which actors in Oscar-nominated films have the highest per-second value.
Who’s The Highest Paid Oscar Actor?
The survey looked at actors who have been in Oscar-nominated films, their average screen time proportion in those films,, total screen time in seconds, the sum of their worldwide box office for their Oscar nominated films,, their worldwide box office screen time proportion for said films in order to calculate their worth per second.
- In the top spot is Sandra Bullock, who’s been in two Oscar nominated films. With a total screen time of 7700 seconds, with a worldwide box office of $1,183,721,286.47 and a worth per second of $94,736.14.
- Up next is Sir Ian McKellen, obviously benefitting from a “Lord of the Rings,’ bump with a total screen time of 6758 seconds, a worldwide box office of $1,374,576,990.01 and a worth per second of $90,614.69.
- The worldwide box office of “Titanic” alone was probably enough to put Kate Winslet the third spot, with a total screen time of 20476 seconds, a worldwide box office of $4,281,778,323.29 and a worth per second of $76,155.62.
- In fourth is the EGOT queen herself Whoopi Goldberg, with a total screen time of 5393 seconds, a worldwide box office of $1,310,308,828.42 and a worth per second of $75,622.77.
- Rounding out the top five is Dustin Hoffman, with a total screen time of 12696 seconds, a worldwide box office of $1,551,902,802.28 and a worth per second of $73,797.69.
Wait, That’s Really Who’s Last?
The list only calculated actors' Oscar-nominated films, not their career box office totals. So many actors who were at one time box office gold are missing, as their hit films didn’t always translate to Oscar attention.
- Robert DeNiro is in 48th place with a total screen time of 13024 seconds, a worldwide box office of $825,675,159.84 and a worth per second of $27,315.94.
- Tom Cruise comes in 49th with a total screen time of 12979 seconds, a worldwide box office of $704,402,630.21 and a worth per second of $26,687.59. It seems people like him in “Mission Impossible” mode, not prestige mode.
