Herbal supplements that can worsen diabetes

When it comes to managing diabetes, the role of lifestyle changes cannot be highlighted enough. From adding the right foods to the diet, to incorporating regular activity in your schedule, diabetes management is all about making healthy choices that keep blood sugar spikes in check. Herbal supplements could help manage this metabolic condition, however the scientific community is still divided over their efficacy in disease management. Many of these herbs that have been trusted for lowering blood sugar can react with medication and could lead to a drop in blood sugar apart from other complications. Some people may also rely on these herbal medications exclusively, skipping diabetes medication altogether, which can lead to high blood sugar or hyperglycaemia. However, this does not mean that one should stay away completely from these herbal supplements, but take them on the advice of their healthcare professional.

According to a study published in Metabolism Open, some herbs may interact with diabetes medications or affect insulin sensitivity, potentially contributing to poorer glycemic control. The study added that people who consume herbs may have different dietary or lifestyle habits that could influence their glycemic status.
