Hendon Hooker might not be ready to play football right away, but he’s still ready, willing and able to get himself better. The Lions’ third-round pick at quarterback knows that he can learn from veteran starter Jared Goff.
Hooker is approaching his new role as a backup quarterback with a zeal to learn everything he can from Goff. During Hooker’s introductory press conference, he was asked about what he hopes to learn from Goff.
“To be a sponge, to come in and learn everything, every nuance, know how to be a pro first and foremost,” Hooker said. “And then, just admire him. He’s been in the League for a long time and he’s done a great job of developing every year. He’s been able to get better and better, and that’s all you can ask for. I’m definitely going to be picking his brain whenever I can. I hope I don’t get annoying to him, but I’m just that kind of person. I just want to get in and do my job and just continue to get better day by day.”
Hooker is still sidelined from full participation as he recovers from a torn ACL suffered in late November. He recently began throwing and moving on the field in workouts.
The injury hasn’t stopped Hooker from preparing mentally, something that Goff is known for as well. It’s a great way for the rookie to do all he can to get ready if his name gets called to fill
