Helldivers movie starring Jason Momoa set for November 2027 release

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have officially scheduled the Helldivers movie adaptation for a Nov. 10, 2027 theatrical release, with Jason Momoa set to star in the live-action sci-fi action film based on the hit PlayStation franchise.

The film adaptation will be directed by Justin Lin, best known for leading multiple Fast & Furious movies. Producing alongside him are PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and veteran producer Hutch Parker, while Gary Dauberman, who penned It and Annabelle, is attached as screenwriter.

The upcoming Helldivers movie will bring Arrowhead Game Studios’ popular cooperative shooter series to the big screen. Known for its explosive combat and biting satire, the franchise centers on elite soldiers deployed to hostile alien planets to defend “Super Earth” and spread what the in-game universe calls “managed democracy.”

Although plot specifics have not yet been revealed, the film is expected to stay true to the core themes of large-scale intergalactic warfare, over-the-top action, and dark humor that defined the franchise.

The original Helldivers launched in 2015 as a top-down co-op shooter developed by Arrowhead and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It built a loyal fanbase thanks to its punishing difficulty, cooperative mechanics, and satirical take on militarism and propaganda.

The franchise reached new heights with the release of Helldivers 2 in 2024. Shifting to a third-person perspective, the sequel became a global breakout hit, drawing millions of players. Its massive planetary war system and evolving live-service narrative helped establish it as one of PlayStation’s most successful multiplayer titles.

Given the cinematic scale and popularity of Helldivers 2, a film adaptation has long been viewed as a natural next step.

The Helldivers movie is part of Sony’s strategy to adapt major PlayStation properties for film and television, following the success of projects such as Uncharted and HBO’s The Last of Us. With Jason Momoa attached as the lead, the studio appears to be aiming for a blockbuster that balances high-intensity action with the irreverent tone fans expect from the franchise.

Jason Momoa has increasingly become a go-to star for major video game adaptations. Most recently, he co-starred in A Minecraft Movie, a comedic live-action adaptation of the globally popular sandbox game, playing Garrett “The Garbage Man” alongside Jack Black’s Steve in the 2025 release. The film performed strongly enough to secure a sequel, with Momoa expected to reprise his role.

Momoa is also part of the ensemble cast of the upcoming Street Fighter film, set for a 2026 release, where he portrays Blanka in the live-action reboot of the classic Capcom franchise.

Further details about the upcoming Helldivers film, including additional casting announcements and storyline specifics, have yet to be disclosed.
