Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress review: 'Cloud-like' luxury comfort for side sleepers

The image shows the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress on a white bed frame in a blue bedroom.

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress has been a contender for our guide to the best mattresses you can buy online ever since we first tested it back in 2024. Always impressing us with its side sleeper comfort, we've now had a chance to put it through our new mattress testing methodology — and uncovered a few more areas where it shines.

How we test mattresses

We conduct seven robust tests in our lab to capture objective data on the four areas of a mattress that most affect your sleep comfort: pressure relief, temperature regulation, motion isolation and edge support. We also sleep on a mattress for at least three weeks before subjectively rating it. This data is fed into a scoring system, along with feedback captured by our testing panel, to create an overall score. Read our full mattress methodology.

The pressure relief for side sleepers is still the stand-out of the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress and why I've been so eager to continue testing it over the past two years (and why it's been a mainstay of our guide to the best mattresses for side sleepers.) It's the perfect cushioned comfort for most looking to avoid dead arms, numb hips, and other areas of pressure build-up.

But even for side sleepers, comfort is about more than just cushioning and there's many factors to consider when choosing a new mattress. That includes motion isolation, edge support and temperature regulation. Having spent over a year testing both versions of the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress, I'm something of an expert, so read on for my full review plus the results of our extensive Sleep Lab tests

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress review: Price

  • Helix mattress sales typically discount 20% off, rising to 25% on special occasions
  • A 120-night trial and lifetime warranty is included
  • On sale, a queen is priced comparably to rival Saatva Classic

Helix mattress sales range between 20% and 25% off throughout the year. However, that discount tends to rise to 27% off during major events, such as the Memorial Day mattress sales in May. (That's often courtesy of a semi-exclusive discount code.)

While we have seen Helix include free items with mattress purchases in the past — either a couple of pillows or an entire bedding bundle — those deals are less frequent than they used to be.

Here's what you can currently expect to pay for the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress:

  • Twin MSRP: $1,492 (usually on sale for $1,149)
  • Twin XL MSRP: $1,732 (usually on sale for $1,349)
  • Full: $2,118 (usually on sale for $1,649)
  • Queen: $2,498.66 (usually on sale for $1,918)
  • King: $2,998.66 (usually on sale for $2,339)
  • California king: $2,998.66 (usually on sale for $2,3399)
  • Short queen: $2,498.66 (usually on sale for $1,918)
  • RV king: $2,998.66 (usually on sale for $2,339)

As well as regular mattress sales, you'll get a 120-night sleep trial, a limited lifetime warranty, plus free and fast shipping when you buy the Helix Midnight Luxe. There is also an option to upgrade to white glove delivery through a third party, with prices and availability depending on your location.

Those sleep benefits are decent, but fall slightly short when you compare them against a similarly priced mattress with a similar spec: the Saatva Classic. In contrast, you'll get a 365-night sleep trial with the Classic, a limited lifetime warranty, plus free white glove delivery.

That's not to say that the Luxe's benefits are at all lacking, but if a lengthy sleep trial and free mattress installation (and removal of your old one) appeals to you, then shop around.

Despite costing nearly triple the price of the DreamCloud (on average, the Midnight Luxe is around the same price as the Saatva when a 27% Helix mattress deal lands during a major holiday sale), we consider it fantastic value for money.

The performance is excellent, matched by the build quality. Yes the cover snags easily, but I have no concerns about the long-term durability of the Midnight Luxe and could see it lasting 10 years with good mattress care.

Value for money score: 4

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress review: Design

  • At 13.5", it’s two inches taller than the Helix Midnight
  • 6 comfort layers, comprising of memory foam, foam and coils
  • Zoned lumbar support coils for pressure relief

At 13.5 inches tall, the Helix Midnight Luxe is 2 inches taller than the Helix Midnight mattress, which sits in the brand’s Core range. This difference is crucial, as a height of between 12 and 14 inches is considered an optimum mattress depth for supporting the side sleeping position.

Like other beds in Helix’s Luxe collection, the Midnight comes with a breathable, hypoallergenic Tencel cover. However, you also have the option to upgrade to a cooling GlacioTex cover for additional temperature regulation, or a GacioTex cooling cover with additional CoolForce layer that is crafted from graphite ribbons to draw heat from the body.

There is yet another optional upgrade; the ErgoAlign layer. This is a zoned top layer featuring ultra dense foam around your mid section, designed to support and release pressure from your lumbar region.

For the purpose of this review, we tested a queen size mattress with the hypoallergenic Tencel cover, but also got the opportunity to spend four nights on a Helix Midnight Luxe with the inclusion of the ErgoAlign layer. For closer analysis on this layer, and whether we think it's worth the additional $249, scroll down to our pressure relief section below.

Beneath the Tencel cover is a premium quilted pillow top sewn into the top of the mattress, which provides an elevated, cloud-like feel. Underneath is a dense layer of responsive foam which helps give the bed its medium firmness rating. Next up, there is a layer of copper gel-infused ultra responsive memory foam for optimal support and stability.

We then reach the layer of durable steel coils, of which there are up to 1,000 within the Midnight Luxe. This advanced lumbar support provides reinforced support beneath the hips to help keep your spine in healthy alignment as well as bolstering the support around the bed’s edge. At the bottom, a dense layer of foam provides the base support of the mattress.

It is worth noting that this bed expands incredibly quickly (within 30-45 minutes), so we would advise making sure your mattress is where you’d like it (and the right side up) before removing it from the box. Its depth, plus weight (between 95 lbs - 125 lbs, depending on the mattress size), make it difficult to maneuver. However, since adding handles in a recent design-refresh, this process is now much easier.

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress review: Sleep comfort

I've been sleeping on the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress on and off for over two years now and it's the bed I always return to when I'm given the chance. It's made for side sleepers and it lives up to that promise, delivering incredible pressure relief to the shoulders and hips. No other bed I've tested has come close.

However, the Midnight Luxe mattress isn't without flaws, including a sink in feel that won't appeal to everyone. That became clear when our Sleep Editor Claire Davies tested it. Despite describing it as a "very comfortable mattress worthy of its top-ranking in our best mattress for side sleepers guide," she prefers the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm for side sleeping (you can read her full Saatva Classic mattress review here.)

"That’s because I like mattresses that keep me aligned and on top of the bed, rather than sinking down into it," she explains.

As subjective comfort is important, I've conducted a series of objective tests and sourced opinions from a wide range of sleepers to fully assess the Helix Midnight Luxe. In my opinion, it's hands-down one of the best mattresses in a box you can buy.

Temperature control: 4 out of 5

Temperature regulation refers to how quickly a mattress is able to dissipate excess heat, allowing your body to maintain the perfect temperature for sleeping (65 to 70°F/18 to 21°C.)

We test temperature regulation using a thermal camera, monitoring how much a mattress heats up with a heat source applied (in other words, one of our testers) and how quickly it cools down once the heat source is removed (when they get off the bed.) We do this over a 30 minute period, checking key spots every minute.

The Helix Midnight Luxe did show a relatively high maximum temperature increase (MTI), climbing to 9°F. This is several degrees higher than close rival the Saatva Classic (MTI of 6.3°F) but below the Helix Sunset Luxe (12.4°F.) The Sunset Luxe is another side sleeper mattress from Helix but its softer foams likely allow it to trap more heat.

When our tester got off the bed, removing the heat source, the temperature dropped rapidly, with a cooling rate of 1.82°F/minute. That's a Best in Class score and faster than the Saatva Classic (although the Saatva had less heat to lose in the first place.)

The Midnight Luxe shows a rapid cooling burst just like the Bear Elite Hybrid. But the Bear has a faster 5-minute cooling rate (2.06°F/min) than the Helix, which is why it hangs on to its top ranking position in our best cooling mattress guide for now.

These results suggest that while the Midnight Luxe mattress might absorb heat quickly, when you move that heat is kicked out of bed.

Our hands-on testing corroborated the overall good results of the thermal cam. Ruth Jones, our in-house heat source, was pleased with how "cool" the Midnight Luxe felt initially and noted she never felt stifled on the bed.

Similarly, I never found myself overheating or waking up sweaty on the Helix Midnight Luxe, although it's worth noting I don't consider myself a hot sleeper. So it might be worth throwing this one across to other members of the team.

Secondary tester Alison Barretta spent four nights on the Midnight Luxe during a hot September in Arizona and stayed comfortably cool throughout.

Meanwhile, Claire Davies, the "designated hot sleeper" on the team, described the Midnight Luxe as "on the whole, good at maintaining a neutral sleeping temperature" (although she did sometimes wake up kicking off the 4-tog comforter.)

"I slept on the Saatva Classic (see my Saatva Classic mattress review) for over seven months and didn’t overheat on it, so if you’re deciding between these two mattresses and overheating is your main concern, I’d recommend the Saatva over the Helix," she says.

If you are a particularly hot sleeper, there are now two separate cooling upgrade options with the Helix Midnight Luxe. The GlacioTex cooling cover, which costs an extra $249 across all mattress sizes at full MSRP, or the GlacioTex cooling cover and a graphite-infused CoolForce layer that works to draw 22% more heat from the body over a 12 hour period. This costs an extra $498.66 for all sizes at full MSRP.

Pressure relief: 4.5 out of 5

Before we dive into pressure relief — how well a bed balances support and cushioning to reduce pressure build up where the body meets the mattress — it's worth noting the Helix Midnight Luxe has been crafted specifically with side sleepers in mind. Because of this, it's unlikely to deliver the all-round comfort of its number one rival, the Saatva Classic.

To objectively test pressure relied, we place a 25kg weight (roughly one-third the weight of the average American) onto the hip and shoulder area of the mattress. Using a laser, we measure how far the weight sank initially, how far it sank after five minutes, and how quickly the materials returned to form once the weight is removed.

Due to the thick Euro top of the Midnight Luxe, it's no big surprise that the weight sank significantly. With 4.8 inches of sink at the shoulder and 5 inches at the hip, you can imagine how the foam comfort layers will respond to your own body weight — they'll yield beneath you. The Helix Sunset Luxe showed slightly more sink again, which is aligned with its softer build.

The Saatva Classic, however, has less sinkage (just about, with 4.6 and 4.75-inch measurements) which means you can expect less of the body contouring provided by the Midnight Luxe. However, the main difference between these two leaders in pressure relief comes when we measure recovery time; how fast the materials return to form.

Having removed the weight from the Saatva Classic, the foams bounced back almost immediately. On the Midnight Luxe, we were waiting upwards of 10 seconds. While they did eventually return to form, this is a slow recovery time and indicates a bed you might feel "stuck" in (two of our testers found it hard to change position on the Midnight Luxe.)

During both stints sleeping on the Midnight Luxe, I (a side sleeper) experienced cloud-like comfort across the shoulders, hips and knees. What’s more, I didn’t experience any of the dreaded 'dead hip', meaning I could sleep through the night.

Secondary tester Claire found it took some time to adjust to the Midnight Luxe, having previously slept on the Saatva Classic. She experienced some hip pain creeping in during the first few nights, but it eased once her body became accustomed to the plusher pillow top. (She never experienced hip pain on the Saatva, but did on the DreamCloud Classic.)

A week later, and she no longer experiences any pain. "My weight feels evenly distributed, so there are no pressure points, and I feel well cradled on my side. The pressure relief is generally best-in-class for side sleeping, and excellent for back sleeping too," she says.

If you do need a little extra support, you can upgrade with the ErgoAlign layer, which adds a boost to the lower back. Tester Alison Barretta tried this for a short period. She's a side sleeper with mild scoliosis and recurrent lower back pain and here's what she had to say:

"I’m typically a side sleeper and found Midnight Luxe comfortable in that position. (I also slept on my stomach at points, which felt fine.) However, by the end of my stay, I was waking up on my back — a position I rarely find myself in," she notes. "Thanks to the Midnight Luxe's reinforced lumbar support (the dense foam in the ErgoAlign centre, firmer pocket coils in the middle) and the cozy pillow-top, I couldn't help but shift onto my back and feel the tension melt away.:

Overall, the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress is a top-of-the-class performer when it comes to pressure relief but with a few caveats. First, while side sleepers and back sleepers should find good support, it's too soft for stomach sleepers (the Saatva Classic is a better all-rounder.) And the slow recovery means you do, on occasion, get stuck. But when you're that comfortable, you might not mind.

Firmness

Mattress firmness is rated on a scale of 1-10, with one indicating exceptionally soft and 10 incredibly firm. Helix Sleep places the Midnight Luxe as slap bang in the middle at 5-6 out of 10 for firmness, but we would rate it slightly firmer at 6 out of 10.

Firmness is subjective, so we ask a variety of testers to weigh in on their perceived feel of a mattress, comparing this to the results from the pressure relief test.

To me, the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress was like sleeping on a marshmallow, an assessment secondary tester Claire Davies didn't quite agree with (although she did concede it offered "a decent wedge of sink-in softness.")

This medium feel is best for side sleepers but the steel coil base of the Midnight Luxe means you never feel like you're going to slide out the other side of the mattress. My back sleeping partner felt comfortably supported on the Midnight Luxe.

If you want something even softer, check out our Helix Sunset Luxe mattress review. A sister of the Midnight Luxe, this is also from the Helix side sleeper line-up but delivers an even softer feel.

Motion isolation: 3.5 out of 5

A mattress with good motion isolation stops movement traveling from one side of a bed to another and is considered a key component in all the best mattresses for couples. If you share a bed with your partner (or your pet decides to share a bed with you at 3 a.m.), then consider this a priority.

Over the past year the Helix Midnight Luxe has been put through its paces by two families, including my partner and young sons, plus the enthusiastic toddler of our Sleep Editor. Not to mention my elderly cat and our objective testing: we've tested every inch of motion isolation on this mattress.

During our subjective testing, we drop a 5kg slam ball onto a designated spot on the mattress from a height of 24 inches. We attach an accelerometer to the other side of the mattress, to measure both the initial impact absorption (IIA) and the decay rate (DR.) We repeat the test 10 times to find an average.

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress has an average IIA of 7.45 — slightly under the 7.863 and the 7.966 of the Saatva and DreamCloud respectively. This is a good score for a spring and foam bed, as the spring base tends to give some bounce. This performance rates among the best hybrid mattresses.

The decay rate isn't so strong, taking an average of 2.58 seconds for movement to come to a stop; almost a full second longer than the 1.703 of the Saatva Classic. Again, this isn't a bad score (besting the DreamCloud and the Bear Elite) but it does place the Midnight Luxe behind its rival at Saatva.

These results suggest that even quite heavy movements are muffled by the mattress but you might find prolonged restlessness spends a long time traveling across the bed.

I'm a self-confessed restless sleeper and I wasn’t disturbed by any movement elsewhere in the bed throughout the night — and I was sharing with my family.

Secondary tester Claire agrees, noting that despite sharing a bed with a combi-sleeper husband who "flops quite violently between positions at night" and a fidgety three year old son, she could sleep through all but the biggest impacts (in other words, when her husband "flops like a stone" getting into bed.)

For most average sized couples (between 130lbs and 239lbs) the Midnight Luxe mattress should deliver enough motion isolation to allow you both to sleep soundly. However, we have reservations about two people both weighing over 230lbs sharing this mattress, as the motion transfer under heavier bodies might be too disruptive.

Edge support: 4 out of 5

Edge support is a term to describe the sturdiness of the perimeter of a mattress. Sturdy edge support is an important feature for any mattress, as it allows you to sleep right up to the bed’s edge, or safely sit before standing without feeling as though the mattress is dipping or collapsing beneath you.

Helix Sleep states that the Midnight Luxe features full perimeter edge support for added stability. To evaluate this claim, we placed a 25kg weight at the foot and side of the mattress, 3 inches in, and measured how far it sank initially and how far it had sank after 5 minutes.

The Midnight Luxe mattress has a thick Euro top, which likely contributed to the high compression of the materials; our weight sank 5 inches at both the foot and side of the mattress. In comparison, the weight only sank 4.375 inches at the side of the Saatva Classic.

We were worried that it would be uncomfortable to sit or lie on the edge of the Midnight Luxe but our 'hands-on' experience of edge support was much more positive. I was able to sleep comfortably on the edge without experiencing any sinking or dipping. This suggests that while the Euro top yields to pressure, the steel coils provide ample support beneath.

Our roll off test showed a similar result — our tester was able to lie right up to the edge of the mattress before they felt unstable, indicating you can use the full surface of the sleep area. Great news for bed sharers.

Again, the Saatva Classic outgunned the Helix Midnight Luxe here with minimal compression around its perimeter, earning a 5 out of 5 score compared to 4 out of 5 for the Helix.

But a 4-star lab rating is still excellent and the edge support on the Helix Midnight Luxe should be ample for most people, including those who need more robust edges to grip and hold onto when getting in and out of bed.

However, as some of our testers found it hard to move around on the Helix Midnight Luxe, you might find yourself struggling against the mattress foams to get out of bed in the morning.

Helix Midnight Luxe mattress review: User reviews

  • 4.5 out of 5 stars from over 8,600+ verified customer reviews (May 2026)
  • Critics deem the Helix Midnight to be softer than expected
  • 5 star reviews cite its outstanding lumbar support

At the time of this update (May 2026), there are 8,600+ verified customer reviews on the Helix Sleep website, giving an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 for the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress.

Many of the 5 star ratings laud the bed’s plush but supportive sleep surface, which they believe provides deep pressure relief for their side sleeping position. Elsewhere among those 5 star reviews, those who share a bed find it comfortable and supportive for all different sleep needs (we rate the Luxe as one of the best mattresses for couples for this reason.)

Other satisfied reviews cite its lumbar support as helping reduce or eliminate back and neck pain, while others recommend the Midnight for both back and side sleepers.

From the relatively small pool of one and two star ratings, the main criticisms are that the mattress is softer than expected while a smaller still minority feel the mattress is much firmer than expected. There were also several criticisms surrounding the Midnight’s temperature regulation, with some complaining of overheating despite investing in the GlacioTex cooling cover.

Most recent reviews praise the 'perfect' balance of plushness and support, and some go as far as to say they're 'obsessed' with this mattress.

Helix Midnight Luxe mattress review: Should you buy it?

The Helix Midnight Luxe provides outstanding pressure relief, crafted specifically for side sleepers. However, we found it to be as comfortable and supportive for back sleepers, too.

The inclusion of a plush, pillow top, and enhanced zoned lumbar support makes it worth the luxury price tag (you can expect to pay around $1,900 for a queen) although side sleepers on a tighter budget might want to consider the cheaper Helix Midnight mattress.

Temperature regulation is decent, but could be worth splashing out on the GlacioTex cooling cover if you're an especially hot sleeper. For a hybrid, the motion isolation is also good (but it's the best memory foam mattresses that tend to excel in this area.) Edge support has been bolstered around the bed's perimeter, so you can sleep comfortably right up to the edge, or safely sit before standing.

After experiencing the Helix Midnight Luxe with ErgoAlign firsthand, we would recommend paying the additional $249 at MSRP for those with significant back pain. However, even without the ErgoAlign layer, we deem the Luxe to be one of the best mattresses for back pain, due to its pressure relief and enhanced lumbar support.

Co-testers Claire Davies and Ruth Jones found the Midnight Luxe a little tricky to move around on, but not as much as on true body-hugging memory foam mattresses or Tempur-Pedic mattresses (which have a more pronounced ‘quick sand’ feel).

Small niggles aside, if you sleep on your side, want a luxury looking mattress and have the money to cover it, the Helix Midnight Luxe is a fantastic choice.
