Heavyweight boxing legend insists he'd have broken Tyson Fury's ribs in fight

Riddick Bowe thinks Tyson Fury's style wouldn't work against the old era of heavyweights as he would have been left with broken ribs.

Fury is undoubtedly one of the greatest heavyweights champions of the past decade as the Brit is unbeaten in 34 professional fights. 'The Gypsy King' won the unified titles against Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 and has held the WBC title for over two years, defending it with stoppage wins against Deontay Wilder, Dillian Whyte and most recently Derek Chisora.

Former undisputed heavyweight champion Bowe recognises Fury's talents but thinks there are flaws in his style. Whilst discussing a theoretical fight between the pair, 'Big Daddy' believes Fury's awkwardness would leave him with "broken ribs" as his body would be exposed.

"I think he's a great fighter, he's the best of them all. But there are things he does that if in my era, that jerky-jerky style [wouldn’t have worked]. The thing is, if he jerky-jerky with me, I’m going to pop him and guys aren’t doing that,” Bowe told iD Boxing. If they did it, they would beat him. I’d have jabbed him; then I’d have stepped in and broken a rib or two."

In his past title defences, Fury has rarely come in trouble and he dominated Chisora for 10 rounds and controlled his fight against Whyte before landing the sixth round KO. Bowe said Fury's opponents need to target his body more, adding: "Guys aren’t going to his body. They’re letting him stand strong and he’s keeping his posture. As the rounds go on, they aren’t breaking him down. They’re not busting his heart, stopping his liver. You’ve got to do the things that will make him tired. They’re not doing that."

Tyson Fury's style has been criticised by Riddick Bowe (PA)

Fury has previously been told by another heavyweight legend in Larry Holmes that he wouldn't be a champion if he competed during his time. Holmes was also critical of modern-day heavyweights for not wanting to fight each other, insisting that the top fighters also fought against each other regardless of money during his era.

Bowe echoed these comments when comparing his generation to the likes of Fury and Anthony Joshua, adding: "I just know that the new heavyweights couldn't deal with the old heavyweights. If you have it in your head that you're going to do it your way and not the trainer's way, how are you going to get things done? They aren't listening."
