Heatwave breaks after record-breaking seven-day of 30C temperatures

The UK has been hit with thunderstorms after a heatwave which left the capital with a sweltering seven consecutive days of temperatures above 30C.

A yellow thunderstorm warning was in place covering southern Scotland until 6am on Monday morning, which comes after thunderstorms across northern parts of England and Wales as well as southern and north-eastern Scotland.

Saturday was provisionally the hottest day of the year, the Met Office, said with highs of 32.7C recorded at Heathrow Airport.

Temperatures above 30C were also recorded in London on Sunday, with forecasters naming the heatwave spell as “unprecedented.”

Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: “We have never seen anything as long lived in terms of a heatwave in September before.”

However, London will be cooler this week, with highs of 25C and sunny intervals predicted on Monday.

The storm warning meant some people were in store for flash flooding, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds – with possible interruptions to road access and public transport.

Mr Morgan said: “We have a third thunderstorm warning overnight for southern Scotland.

“That expires at 6am. And then once that’s cleared, there will be a few thunderstorms tomorrow.

“But for the vast majority they will be a bit more scattered in nature than (on Sunday).”

London is not expected to be affected by storms, with the week remaining largely dry, with the exception of Tuesday, where there is a chance of showers during the afternoon.
