Heating experts say switching to £1.49 lightbulbs can save money on energy bills

Experts have shared that the type of lights that some use in their homes could be costing them extra money.

Changing to a specific type of bulb can improve efficiency which can help chip away at energy bills as time passes.

This is according to the eco-heating specialists Daikin UK, who suggest getting LED lights instead of more common incandescent lights.

The experts say that LED lighting products produce light up to 90 percent more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs.

You can pick up LED lighting from as little as £1.49 at B&Q, and they are available at most supermarkets both as single light bulbs or in multi packs.

Depending how you light your home and how good you are at switching them off, replacing your old lightbulbs with LEDs could shave as much as 11 percent off your bill.

Other money saving hacks that Daikin UK suggests include:

  • Reduce your room thermostat - It might sound obvious, but increasing the room set point by 1°C could increase your yearly heating bill by 10%, according to the Energy Savings Trust. If you take it down a notch, bringing the indoor temperature closer to the temperature outside, less energy is needed to heat your home.
  • Draught proof your key heat loss areas - Where possible, place draught blockers by doors and windows, where there is increased risk of heat loss. This way, more of the energy you’re paying for is being put to good use.
  • Adjust your settings - Wash your clothes and dishes on a lower temperature or eco-friendly wash and opt for full loads over half loads. And while you’re at it, reduce your boiler flow temperature too. This helps save the pennies and the environment.
  • Book a home inspection - There are projects across the UK, such as the Cold Homes Energy Efficiency Survey Experts (C.H.E.E.S.E) Project, that will come and inspect your property via thermal imagery and inform you of the best ways to save energy; this is ideal as it is tailored to you and your home.

This comes as many UK households are seeking ways to reduce their energy costs as average bills rose from £1,971 to £2,500 this month.

While the typical bill will be capped at £2,500, you could pay more if you use more than average.
