Heathrow bosses have appealed to Sadiq Khan to slash fares for its workers on Elizabeth Line services to the airport.
Chief executive John Holland-Kaye told the Standard that the £12.80 fare for a journey to or from Heathrow Airport that starts in, ends in or goes through Zone 1, is deterring staff from using the line.
He said: ”I understand that the high prices on the Elizabeth Line are targetting people flying not people working. But we have 75,000 workers here and we want them to make use of public transport.
“We are asking TfL to work with us on bringing in different fares for workers because at the moment it is clearly pricing them out of the market. I am asking the Mayor to intervene and stand up for workers.”
Mr Holland-Kaye, who is set to leave Heathrow later this year, said he had offered to go halves on the cost of subsidising ticket fares for airport workers but had not received a reply from TfL.
He was speaking ahead of the third and final phase of the roll-out of services on what is already Britain’s busiest railway on May 21. From that date there will be two services an hour directly connecting Shenfield in Essex and Heathrow airport, with no need to change trains.
