Wrights have contrasting heats as Rip Curl Pro starts

The Wright family had plenty to debrief after a day of vastly contrasting surfing fortunes at the Rip Curl Pro.

Older brother Owen is the centre of attention for this event and he made a dream start to his professional swansong, beating Brazil's Filipe Toledo on Thursday as the event got underway after a two-day delay.

But as he revelled in the Winkipop break next to Bells Beach, his sister Tyler is again facing a shock first-round elimination.

Tyler Wright, the two-time world champion who is defending her Bells Beach title, finished third in her three-surfer heat.

She was also a stunning first-round casualty at the previous world tour round in Portugal.

Eight-time and defending world champion Stephanie Gilmore ended a busy opening day with a major statement, posting the highest wave score of the men or women.

Gilmore, who currently is on the wrong side of the mid-season cut, posted an 8.83 on her last wave to cap a convincing heat win.

The event moved from Bells Beach to the neighbouring Winkipop break because of below-par conditions, making the most of a two- to three-foot swell.

Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater was the biggest name forced into the men's round-one eliminations after he finished third in his heat, won by Australia's world No.1 Jack Robinson.

Owen Wright beat reigning world champion Toledo, who won the event last year for the first time.

They will avoid the round-one elimination because Toledo was second in their three-man heat, meaning he also advances to the last 32.

Wright is in the event as a wildcard, and this will be his only event of the year before he retires.

The Olympic bronze medallist is leaving competition because of ongoing concerns about his health, following a horrific 2015 wipeout in Hawaii that left him with a traumatic brain injury.

Australia's Callum Robson, who made the semi-finals of the previous round in Portugal, is another prominent name risking elimination.

Connor O'Leary and Liam O'Brien are the other Australians in the elimination round.

But Hawaiian star John John Florence starred with the highest wave score of 8.43 in his heat win, while Japan's Kanoa Igarashi had the best combined total of 16.40.

American teenager Caitlin Simmers, who won Portugal, is another big name in the women's elimination round.

World No.1 Molly Picklum won her heat, while fellow Australian Sally Fitzgibbons posted the best women's heat score of 16.57 and had an 8.50 wave score in the heat in which Wright was third.
