The National Weather Service pushed heat index values as high as 116 degrees into its official warning language for northern Missouri over the weekend, and the alerts covering the Kansas City metro, central Missouri and eastern Kansas are scheduled to stay in effect until 7 a.m. CDT Tuesday.
That is the practical change for households: this is no longer a single hot afternoon. NWS Kansas City/Pleasant Hill issued an Extreme Heat Warning at 3:32 a.m. CDT on July 26 citing heat index values up to 116 for Grundy, Harrison, Linn, Macon, Mercer, Putnam, Randolph, Sullivan, Adair and Schuyler counties in Missouri. A second warning issued later that morning cited values up to 115 across portions of northeast Kansas and north central, northeast, northwest and west central Missouri, running until Tuesday morning.
