Hearts hero Ryan Stevenson leads Glenafton Athletic to safety after abandoned game points award

Glenafton Athletic have clinched West of Scotland League Premier Division survival after being awarded three precious points from an abandoned match.

Ryan Stevenson's men finally found out their fate on Thursday night following a meeting of the league's management committee.

Officials had to deal with already relegated Blantyre Vics turning up to Loch Park with just seven players and one coach for their league game with Glens on the night of Rangers' Europa League final clash against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Glens took a 2-0 lead before a Vics player went down injured and was unable to continue. As they then only had six players, the referee abandoned the contest.

Livid Glens No 2 Mark Roberts demanded his side were given the points as he labelled the whole affair a shambles last Monday night after a vital 0-0 draw at Cumbernauld United.

And both he and the club received the news they were hoping for when league chiefs stated the result would stand which secured safety.

In a statement on the club's Twitter page, Glens' relief at the end of a long season was obvious with the committee paying tribute to the management team of Hearts hero Stevo, Roberts and Alan Kerr for steering them away from relegation.

"Following a West of Scotland management committee meeting," it read, "we have been awarded the three points from the abandoned match against Blantyre Victoria. The result will stand as a 2-0 victory.

"This outcome and result elevates us above Benburb and Troon and puts us into 12th position in the league, and secures our status as a West of Scotland League Premier Division team for next season.

"This 38-league game season has been one of the most gruelling and challenging in the club's history, and we would like to thank all our supporters for their continued backing.

"The transformation in the team since the appointments of the management team of Ryan, Mark and Alan has been remarkable, and we would like to thank all our players and management staff for their efforts throughout the course of season.

"We would also like to thank our kitman and physio Tommy McKenna for his tireless work throughout the season, his endeavours are greatly appreciated by the players, management team and committee."

Stevenson and Roberts recently signed fresh two-year contracts as they look to bring glory to this corner of East Ayrshire.

The club statement added: "We believe, with these men in charge, that it is an exciting time to be a Glens fan and that we are confident we can look forward to a successful 2022/2023 season."
