Heartfelt tributes paid to ‘wonderful’ woman after body found in search for missing Glasgow doctor

A young doctor who was reported missing from Glasgow has been remembered as a 'wonderful' woman, after a body was found during the search for her.

Dr Sophie Johnston vanished from the Partick area of the city at around 8.30am on Monday, November 21, with officers launching an investigation in a desperate bid to trace her.

At around 10.15am this morning, however, police confirmed that a body was found near Baldernock Crescent in Milngavie. Formal identification has yet to take place but police say Sophie's family have been informed.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. Since the sad discovery, tributes have flooded in from devastated loved ones, who have described Sophie as 'a talented doctor and a lovely person'.

Euan Wilkie, Sophie's cousin, said: "Thank you to everyone that shared our posts looking for Sophie. Unfortunately, she was found dead this morning. We were all very lucky to have her in our family."

Katie Gilbert wrote: "Very sorry to see this update on Sophie. I hadn't seen her since we were all at medical school, but her energy and sense of fun always made an impression. Terrible loss for her family, friends and colleagues. Thoughts with them all."

Claire M Ronald commented: "So so sorry.. .I am still in disbelief. I remember Sophie as a Junior, talking about her sister Natalie. I met Sophie a few months ago in West End. RIP Sophie."

Karolina Agur added: "There are no words… Rest in Peace, beautiful Sophie." Sophie was a qualified GP and is understood to have worked at Clinetix Rejuvenation in Glasgow.

She qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Edinburgh in 2009 and worked at both the city's Royal Infirmary and Western General during her junior doctor training.

The skilled medic also worked in Melbourne, Australia, where she became interested in the damaging affects of sun exposure on the skin. In 2015, she returned to the UK to complete her training and become a fully qualified GP.

More recently, she spent time as in a hospital-based position specialising in dermatology.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.15am on Tuesday, 22 November, the body of a woman was found in an area near Baldernock Crescent, Milngavie.

"Although formal identification has still to take place, the family of 35-year-old Sophie Johnston has been informed. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a report will be forwarded to the Procurator Fiscal."
