Heartbroken Nottingham family of eight 'lose everything' after devastating bedroom fire destroys home

A family said they have "lost everything" after their home was gutted by a fire. Three crews rushed to the scene of the house fire in Vale Crescent North, Wollaton, on Tuesday morning, October 18.

Mum of seven Kayley Firth has described the incident as "big fire" which started in the back bedroom of her house. She said she rushed her family out of the house and the fire spread "too quickly".

The 35-year-old, a full-time mum, said she has lived in the house with her children for four years. It all started at around 8am, when her six year old son went downstairs in the kitchen to inform her mum "the curtain was on fire".

Speaking of the incident, the mum added: “I was in the kitchen and my son, aged six, came down downstairs and said that the curtain was on fire.

“It extended too quickly. He [my son] started the fire, he was playing with a lighter."

She went on and said: “He was petrified, and apologized. He said he did not mean to do it.

"We were all in shock. One of my children was staying at a friend’s house and another was at my mum’s.

“But I got all the five children out of the house. Our dog didn’t want to leave the house, he was too scared so firefighters had to carry him out.”

The mum said they have probably lost “thousands of pounds” and everything they owned in the fire. She added: “I do not even have a pair of trainers left. Everything has either been burned or destroyed by water.

“That includes computers, TV and clothes. We have lost thousands of pounds worth of stuff.”

The family said they could not save anything from the property apart from some frozen food and baby nappies. The first floor has been destroyed by the fire and everything is covered in smoke.

Downstairs, the floor is flooded and most of their items are soaked in water. The heartbroken mum said: "We have been told that we cannot live here anymore. The house is destroyed, gone."

She said she is due to meet with the council later today to discuss temporary accommodation arrangements. “We will stay at my mum’s in the meantime. I’ve lived here for four years and now it is all gone.”

Her mum, Denise Firth, a part time carer of Aspley, added: “My daughter called me screaming. She said her house was on fire.”

The 53-year-old added: “The fire brigade arrived within five minutes. Police came as well.

“Now they will have to sleep at mine. We’ll be like sardines but we have done it before.”

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We've got a domestic fire at Vale Crescent North in Wollaton. We were called at 8.05am. Stockhill Fires Station, Highfields Fire Station and London Road Fire Station were in attendance - it was a multi-agency incident."
