The devastated family of missing Renfrew dad Gary Watson Shearer say they fear he has died.
The 53- year-old flew out to Lanzarote to celebrate St Patrick’s Day but has not been seen since leaving a bar in the holiday resort of Puerto del Carmen on March 16.
Gary – who has type 2 diabetes and epilepsy – was reportedly denied entry to a taxi outside Bar 67 and was later spotted on CCTV laying unconscious in a doorway.
His heartbroken family – who have travelled to the Spanish island to conduct their own search – say they have to accept the likelihood that he has died.
His sister Michelle Shearer told the Glasgow Times: “The past seven weeks have been a living nightmare and we’ve had to accept and come to terms with the likelihood that Gary is no longer alive.
“We know he needs daily medication and wouldn’t be able to survive this amount of time without it. We know he is on the island somewhere but we just don’t know exactly where.”
Gary’s loved ones, including mum Ann, 73, stepfather Danny, 65, and Michelle, 43, say they will not give up their campaign to find out what happened to him and have vowed to return to Lanzarote to ensure the authorities are committed to the ongoing search for the dad.
Michelle added: “What we need to know is how has he just disappeared into thin air? Someone must know what happened to Gary, but we are not getting any answers.
“We’ll keep on pushing the Spanish police and we will be heading out in a few weeks to conduct more searches on the island. He is there somewhere – but we now accept that he’s no longer likely to be alive.”
Celtic fan Gary went missing only hours after arriving in Lanzarote. He took just 70 euros out with him but left the rest of his money, bank card, passport and medication in the hotel.
He had previously travelled to Puerto del Carmen with family and was keen to return for some sunshine. Gary's family launched a mass search for him when he failed show up for his flight home on March 23.
Michelle said: “Family was everything to him and this is completely out of character. He was never without a smile on his face and always put other people ahead of himself. He doted on his family and had so much ahead of him.
“Every time the phone rings we are hoping it’s someone with news. It’s getting harder and harder for us as the days and weeks go by.
“It’s been a tough time for all of us. Our lives are in complete turmoil, and we face the daily agony of having no answers.”
