Heartbreak as puppy hit by car and dies on busy Nottingham road

A heartbroken mum says "something needs to be done" after her beloved seven-month-old puppy died after being hit by a car. Mandy Davidson, 49, who lives in Chingford Road in Bilborough, says speeding is a big problem there.

Ms Davidson's puppy Bailey was hit by a passing car earlier this week at around 8.30pm - she believes the car involved was going too fast at the time of the incident. And, with a primary school located on the road and multiple families living nearby, she is calling on something to be done about the speed cars travel down the road.

The speed limit in Chingford Road is 20mph - however, neighbours say cars use the route as a 'rat run', racing up and down at much higher speeds. Ms Davidson told Nottinghamshire Live: "There's a lady on a mobility scooter who lives down the road, she told me she is scared to go out because of the speed they go up her road.

"He was bought for my children and he wasn't even in the middle of the road when it happened. I had to go out and clean all the blood off the road, it was everywhere - he died instantly. You can imagine the speed that he was hit at.

"This is why I've said something needs to be done about the speed that these cars are driving at. We had just brought my daughter in five minutes before - thank God we did.

"It could have been so much worse. We have people on this street who have children who play out until quite late in the evening and the worry is that something awful can happen.

"I have seen some cars which go at 40, 50 even 60mph down here - I've even said to my partner that I feel like getting a speed gun and trying to sort it out myself. That's how bad it is. All it takes is one speeding driver, with all the kids going to school, and it's disaster. They have got to do something about it - it can't carry on like this."

Ms Davidson added that local children were very upset when they heard that Bailey, who was a very calm puppy who never barked, had died - as he was popular with everyone within the local community.

Nicola Gurcher, 35, who also lives in Chingford Road, said: "It's definitely a big issue here. People use it like a cut through and go way too fast. My lad used to go to that school and they were speeding down here every morning."

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It's horrendous. To say it's supposed to be a 20mph, I see cars going a lot faster than that every single day. It's up to the drivers at the end of the day, if there's a speed limit you should stick to it - end of." Nottinghamshire Live contacted Nottinghamshire Police and council officials over the reports of speeding.
