Heartbreak as popular attraction in West Country's 'prettiest' village set to close

A popular attraction in the Cotswolds is due to close after 35 years. The Old Mill at Lower Slaughter, near Bourton-on-the-Water, has now launched a 'mega sale' on its remaining stock ahead of shutting permanently.

The news, which has been advertised on the venue’s website, has saddened many of the thousands of people who have enjoyed visiting it in the past. Tourists making the short trip from Bourton to the idyllic village of Lower Slaughter have often taken the opportunity to visit the Old Mill’s gift and craft shop, museum and a cafe on the edge of the River Eye, reports Gloucestershire Live.

It's one of the West Country's most 'Instagrammable' villages , with many heading to the area to take a picture of the historic water wheel at the mill, which dates back to the 19th century. The site is one of the reasons why the village has in the past been named as the prettiest in the UK.

Former Gloucestershire Live journalist Helen Gadd said: “I have been visiting Lower Slaughter and The Mill with my children since they were young (about 15 years) and we have always enjoyed mooching around its eclectic collection of memorabilia and the shop. We especially loved their homemade ice cream which was absolutely delicious and some of the best we’ve ever tasted.

“It’s such a shame they are closing as they are an integral part of a visit to Lower Slaughter and will be very much missed. It won’t be the same without them.”

Lower Slaughter’s near neighbour, Upper Slaughter, is known as a Doubly Blessed and Thankful village because not a single resident’s life was lost in conflict during the two world wars. It is one of 14 British villages that survived any loss of life in combat.
