Heartache as longstanding Edinburgh café Elephants and Bagels closes

A much-loved café that specialises in bagels and has served Edinburgh's residents for decades has shocked fans by taking to social media to reveal that it is closing.

Elephants & Bagels, which is found on Marshall Street in the Potterrow area of the city, has gathered a large following thanks to its tasty (and great value) soups, salads, and bagels. However, posting on their official Facebook page, they revealed that they will no longer be opening.

The succinct post read: "Elephants & Bagels is now permanently closed. We would like to thank you all for your custom over the years." The owners did not give reasons for the closure, Edinburgh Live has contacted them for comment.

Saddened by the news, fans flocked to the post to offer their thanks to the owners.

One wrote: "I am so sorry, It was one of my favourite places in Edinburgh. Many thanks for all the delicious bagels and coffee, I will cherish the happy memories. Another added: "Oh no so sad to read this. Thank you for being an iconic Edinburgh place and always having gluten-free bagels."

A former employee wrote: "I'm so sorry to read this. You steered it through 25 years though?! That's an amazing achievement, congratulations Andrea.

"Thank you for the opportunity to work there, the life lessons, good chats, crosswords, laughs and friendships. Working at the Bagel Shop will always be one of the best experiences of my life!"
