The best house shoes might be fuzzy Crocs. Yes, really

Have you heard the good word? You can buy Crocs lined in faux fur.

After I had cornered several friends in flimsy slippers and maniacally recited the gospel of these miracle shoes, I realized only a handful had heard about them. Given the viral levels of popularity they deserve – especially at this accessible price point – this shocked me.

Maybe it’s the look. Part utilitarian water shoe, part clog, Crocs have long been synonymous with all things uncool. Crocs are not trying to help you score any style points. But as a cool mom, not a regular mom (perhaps the least cool thing I’ve ever said), that can’t-bother-to-care confidence is exactly what I aspire to. And if you can get past the eyerolls, you’ll never go back to slippers.

A sheep in a croc’s clothing

I spent years sliding around my hardwood floors in traditional mules with paper-thin soles. In the summer, scratchy sandals left my arches chafed and my toes naked and afraid. Then I landed on a pair of Baya faux-fur-lined Crocs and learned that the best house shoes don’t look like shoes at all.

You may think of Crocs as sandal substitutes to don at a public pool or a dorm shower. You may even own a pair or six from their rise in the early aughts. But after a 2017 Kane runway appearance put them back on the map, Crocs have been reborn in every conceivable permutation. They now come in platforms, ballet flats, boots and sport collaborations with brands like LoveShackFancy, Coca-Cola and the NBA. There’s now a perfect pair for every occasion, but a faux-fur lining truly transforms the familiar utility shoes into an emotional support sweater for your feet.

Their lace-free, step-in design is the kind of unfussy setup I crave on lazy days, and the plush ankle strap prevents my feet from sliding out. Their faux-fur lining? Heaven on a cold morning, a hug on crampy feet. The roomy toe box allows my toes to splay naturally, and the anatomic footbed provides a soft place to land for my feet. Their unbelievable lightness makes them feel akin to wearing nothing at all.

Thanks to their waterproof upper and respectably treaded soles, I’ve even been known to wear them outdoors for quick tasks like grabbing the mail or bringing in the recycling bin. After a quick spray of disinfectant and a wipe down with a warm cloth, they’re sanitary enough for carpet duty again.

When I asked my physiotherapist what she thought about my indoor furry Crocs obsession, she said: “They’re not the best, but there are worse options out there.” She prefers adjustable ankle straps, she said, to prevent unwanted lateral movement while wearing them. But in the three years since buying them, I haven’t experienced a modicum of discomfort, nor any injuries I can attribute to them. And they fill a void traditional shoes cannot.

A shoe for all the little tasks

Sure, you might lace up your Asics or New Balance sneakers before an outdoor stroll or session on the treadmill. But according to research from the Best Practice & Research Clinical Endocrinology, up to 30% of our daily activity falls under non-exercise activity thermogenesis, commonly referred to as Neat. Think of the steps you take to put away laundry, vacuum your floors or pace around from room to room while on the phone.

Faux-fur-lined Crocs make gallivanting around the house while checking chores off your list feel less of, well, a chore. They’re my favorite way to romanticize and find comfort in the quieter, more mundane moments spent at home. This cool mom doesn’t think twice about what the neighbors say.
