Minister becomes eighth Tory MP to announce they are stepping down at next election – as it happened

Afternoon summary

• The levelling up minister Dehenna Davison has become the latest Tory MP to announce they are standing down at the next election. Davison is only 29, and was only elected in 2109. See 4.29pm and 4.53pm.

• Downing Street has expanded the inquiry into alleged bullying by Dominic Raab to include a third formal complaint, relating to claims about his behaviour in a third ministerial role.

• Rishi Sunak has said the pay rise being asked for by the Royal College of Nursing is “obviously unaffordable”. (See 2.13pm.) The RCN is asking for RPI inflation plus 5%, which has been estimated by the government at either 17.6% or 19.2% (depending on whether you use September’s inflation figure, or October’s). The government claims this would cost either £9bn or £10bn. But the RCN does not accept these figures, which the government calculates by assuming all NHS staff, apart from doctors, would get the same pay rise because they are all under the same Agenda for Change pay regime.

• Rishi Sunak has been criticised over the reappointment of Jacob Rees-Mogg’s business partner as a trade minister after the Conservative peer suggested farmers could be helped to turn their barns into “offices or whatever” if they are hit by post-Brexit trade deals.

• Universities could go bankrupt if the government limits the number of foreign students in a bid to bring down net migration, an adviser on immigration policy has warned.
