Manchester United fans were left questioning their own players once again after seeing Ralf Rangnick’s Austria impress for the second time in a week as they drew with France on Friday night.
The world champions had to rely on a late equaliser from Kylian Mbappe to rescue a point after Andreas Weimann had put Austria within seven minutes of a famous win. Nevertheless, viewers were left praising Rangnick’s side as the former United interim manager continues to impress on the international stage.
The German was named Austria’s new manager back in April while he was still in charge at Old Trafford, before it was confirmed by United that he wouldn’t be staying on in his consultancy role as previously agreed. Since his departure, Rangnick has faced some criticism for his spell in charge of the Reds, which saw United scrape a place in the Europa League.

The 63-year-old regularly hit out at his own players in interviews and press conferences as the season wore on. And after seeing the impact he’s made in such a short time with Austria, United fans have found themselves questioning whether he was ever part of the problem at the club.
Rangnick began his time in charge of the national side with a 3-0 win over 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia. Although he hasn’t been able to repeat the trick in his following two games, his side have displayed a high pressing system in their 2-1 defeat to Denmark and their draw with France – something United fans didn’t get to see during his time at Old Trafford.
Since taking over with Austria, Rangnick has had the work he did with United defended by David Alaba, who has insisted he is a “world-class” manager. “He has been really good,” David Alaba told The Athletic.
"You can see we have a really good plan and you can see it works for us on the pitch. He doesn’t want us to let the opponents breathe air. It is good for us.
“I have known Ralf since I was 18 years old and he is a world-class coach. What he did in the past is something special and now I am seeing it close up. He showed what he can do at Leipzig, Salzburg and Hoffenheim.
“He didn’t have a lot of time in Manchester. He has a really good plan and knows a lot about football.”
