‘He’s a guy that can create separation,’ says Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla of Sam Hauser on his career night

“He’s a guy that can create separation,” said Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla of reserve forward Sam Hauser after the Celtics swingman put up a career-high 24 points on a sizzling 6-of-12 rate from beyond the arc and 9-of-15 overall to help the team beat the Detroit Pistons at home.

“Usually, guys who can shoot the ball are also good screeners, so putting them in the action is another guy that they have to worry about along with Jayson (Tatum) and Jaylen (Brown), whether it’s (Marcus) Smart or Al (Horford),” Mazzulla explained. “So, when you add him involved, you also have another layer to how they are going to guard.”

Noting how the team has been playing with a lot more off-ball frequency this season early on, the Celtics coach related that they are especially great at reading defenses and getting each other open.

“Sam adds to that,” suggested Mazzulla. “When you have guys who are willing to do that, it fits that identity.”
