HBO has officially renewed 'True Detective' for its fifth season, with Issa López set to lead the upcoming installment under her new overall deal with the network. The decision to greenlight Season 5 follows the success of 'True Detective: Night Country,' the fourth season of the anthology series, which garnered significant viewership numbers.
'Night Country' featured Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in leading roles and became the most-watched season of the show to date, attracting 12.7 million cross-platform viewers. The season finale, which aired on Feb. 18, drew 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max, marking a 57% increase in viewership compared to the premiere episode in January.
In a statement, López expressed her excitement about continuing the 'True Detective' journey, emphasizing the collaborative and adventurous nature of the creative process. Francesca Orsi, HBO's executive vice president of programming, praised López's talent and vision, highlighting her instrumental role in the success of 'Night Country.'
'Night Country' followed detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro as they investigated the mysterious disappearance of eight men at an arctic research station in Alaska. The season featured a talented ensemble cast, including Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, and Christopher Eccleston, among others.
While Foster and Reis are not confirmed for Season 5, the show's tradition of changing lead actors with each new installment continues. López served as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for 'Night Country,' with Foster also serving as an executive producer alongside Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, and Mark Ceryak of Pastel.
Additional executive producers on 'Night Country' included Chris Mundy, Alan Page Arriaga, and others, with original 'True Detective' creator Nic Pizzolatto and key cast members from Season 1 also involved in the production.
With the renewal of 'True Detective' for Season 5, fans can look forward to another captivating chapter in the acclaimed series, guided by the creative vision of Issa López.
