'Hazardous asbestos' still lying on Ayrshire street after council chiefs promised clear up

A 'hazardous asbestos' pile which kids have been spotted 'climbing all over' has remained lying on an Ayrshire street for almost a week.

The dangerous waste has been rooted to the spot on at a car park on Kincaidston Drive, Ayr since it was first discovered on Tuesday night.

Council chiefs promised a swift clear up of the toxic fibres over the weekend after residents raised the alarm on Thursday morning.

Officials at the local authority vowed to get a specialist contractor in to safely tackle the mess on Monday.

But Ayrshire Live has been told by residents that as of 6pm confirmed that the waste was still there.

Last week concerned dad Don Young told how he noticed children in school uniforms were climbing over the asbestos pile and "jumping on it."

Yesterday council officials said the dumping of the "potentially hazardous" waste was "particularly callous," as they hit out at thoughtless fly-tippers.

A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: "The illegal dumping of any waste in our public spaces is completely irresponsible, the fact that this material is potentially hazardous is particularly callous.

"We quickly contacted a specialist contractor to have the material removed and they have confirmed it will be taken away today (Monday)."

This morning officials vowed to return to the specialist contractor, a spokesperson added: "they know it is a priority."
