Hawks hopeful over duo, Dangerfield return uncertain

Hawthorn are confident star pair James Sicily and Jack Gunston will be fit for a mouth-watering blockbuster against the Western Bulldogs after injury scares.

And Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield is eyeing his return from a calf injury against West Coast on Sunday, but appears no guarantee to feature.

Collingwood also could be boosted by the returns of ace midfielder Nick Daicos (calf) and former captain Scott Pendlebury (achilles) for Gather Round.

The star Magpie duo will be tested at training on Wednesday to determine their fitness for Friday night's clash against Fremantle at Adelaide Oval.

Hawthorn spearhead Gunston pulled up sore in his right hamstring in the third quarter of his club's epic one-point Easter Monday win over Geelong.

But after having treatment, he played out the game and kicked the winning point at the death.

The 34-year-old, and skipper Sicily, were notable absentees from the Hawks' injury list issued late on Tuesday.

"The fact he (Gunston) came back on, I guess, having done a couple of hammies before, it's pretty unlikely that he's actually done that (again)," Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell said post-match.

Gunston earlier played down the incident as "just cramp".

The Hawks could have Karl Amon (knee) available to front up against the Dogs at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night, with the winger to face a fitness later this week.

Dangerfield told SEN before Monday's match that his troublesome calf was "ready to go" while his coach Chris Scott indicated the Brownlow medallist had been close to selection.

"I hesitate to say, 'Yes, he could play, but we're choosing not to' - it's not as simple as that," Scott said.

"He's put some good training together and if there's a battle between, 'Is he right to play, or should we invest a little bit more in sort of later on in the season?' - that battle is winning a little bit at the moment."

Geelong could err on the side of caution for Sunday given they face the unbeaten Western Bulldogs the following Friday.

Cats forward Jeremy Cameron suffered a knock to his body but Scott said he was in no danger of missing Gather Round.
