The governor of Hawaii has revealed a landmark $4 billion settlement to address the legal repercussions of the devastating wildfires that ravaged Maui last year. This significant agreement, subject to court approval, involves seven defendants who will collectively pay $4.037 billion to compensate all individuals who have filed claims related to the August 8, 2023 windstorms and wildfires on Maui. Approximately 2,200 affected parties who initiated lawsuits will benefit from this resolution.
The defendants in this settlement include the state of Hawai‘i, County of Maui, Hawaiian Electric, Kamehameha Schools, West Maui Land Co., Hawaiian Telcom, and Spectrum/Charter Communications. Governor Josh Green emphasized that this settlement aims to aid in the healing process for those impacted by the wildfires, expressing his commitment to expedite the agreement to ensure swift distribution of resources to the affected individuals.
Hawaiian Electric disclosed that the settlement was reached following four months of mediation, with a focus on preventing similar tragedies in the future. Shelee Kimura, the president and CEO of Hawaiian Electric, underscored the company's dedication to preventing such disasters from reoccurring.
The wildfires that engulfed Maui last August resulted in the destruction of over 2,000 acres in Lahaina, as well as hundreds of acres in Kula and Olinda. The economic toll of the wildfires, including damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure, coupled with the impact on tourism, is estimated to have reached up to $6 billion, according to Moody’s RMS. Tragically, the fires claimed the lives of more than 100 individuals.
