Hawaii couple hit with $18,000 power bill for neighbourhood lighting after being told they owned the street

A couple from Hawaii was left shocked after receiving an $18,000 (£13,282) electric bill last month, with their electricity provider claiming they were responsible for paying for the entire neighbourhood’s streetlights.

Desha-Ann Kealoha and her husband Rashann Kealoha received a letter from the Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) on 27 January which stated they were the legal owners of the street in Oahu, and had not paid invoivces for the streetlights for years.
