Have your say on A5014 Chester Road cycle lanes scheme

Residents are being urged to voice their opinions on plans to upgrade the walking and cycling routes along a major road in Old Trafford. Following a public consultation in 2021 on the proposals for the A5014 Chester Road feedback has been analysed and an 'interim' solution has been drawn up.

The next phase of the consultation began on Monday (November 21) with plans including temporary pop-up cycle lanes along the A56 Bridgewater Way. The objective of the proposals is to free up congestion on Bridgewater Way while still providing safer active travel infrastructure on an alternative route and encouraging people to opt for non-motorised forms of transport, such as walking and cycling.

The scheme will be temporary but would be replaced with a permanent design in the future. The proposals include removing the cones, introducing lightly segregated cycle lanes in each direction (between 1.5m and 2.0m wide), and removing existing uncontrolled crossings.

They also include the introduction of two new zebra crossings and the shortening of the right turn lane on the A56 Bridgewater Way junction approach. The four-week consultation will give Trafford residents the opportunity to give their thoughts on the proposals which, if successful, are expected to be implemented in Spring 2023.

A second phase of proposals targeting the section of the A56 Chester Road from M60 Junction 7 to Talbot Road, is currently in the preliminary design stage and will be consulted on once this stage is complete. Chris Morris, Trafford council’s director of transport, highways and the environment, said: “Our first consultation was extremely thorough and we received a large number of responses.

"With this scheme, we are hoping to alleviate congestion on this route and yet retain a robust cycle lane which allows cyclists to travel in safety. We would encourage as many residents as possible to take part in this consultation as we are very interested in your views on the proposals.”
