Hatton Garden thief 'Basil' gets extra 6.5 years in prison on top of 10-year jail term

The Hatton Garden robber known as Basil has had his jail sentence extended… for failing to pay back his loot.

Alarm expert Michael Seed, 62, has coughed up less than £50,000 of the £4.7million he pocketed in Britain’s biggest burglary.

More than £14million of precious metals, cash and jewels were stolen during the safety deposit centre raid in 2015.

Seed – dubbed "The Ghost" during his three years at large – will now serve an extra six-and-a-half years on top of his ten-year jail term.

Details of the repayment were revealed following a Freedom of Information request. Seed was the last of the ageing 10-strong gang – dubbed the ‘diamond wheezers’ – to be captured. He was convicted in 2019.

The other robbers have also paid back measly amounts. Two have already had their sentences extended.

Police believe at least £10million taken in the London raid is still outstanding.

David Spencer, of the Centre for Crime Prevention think-tank, said: “This sends a clear message that crime does pay.

“These crooks have been forced to pay back a fraction of their ill-gotten gains.

“That is a slap in the face to those who had items stolen.”

The Crown Prosecution Service said: “When possible, we seek to recover the ill-gotten gains of convicted criminals and compensate victims.”
