Hateley feels Rangers & Celtic joining the European Super League would be 'win-win'

Rangers hero Mark Hateley has backed his old club and rivals Celtic to join the European Super League, calling it a "win-win".

It comes after the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Justice said recently  that UEFA rules allowing it to grant prior approval to new competitions such as the Super League were contrary to EU law, leading Super League’s backers A22 to declare victory and announce proposals for new men’s and women’s competitions.

Clubs including Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan – founder members of the original Super League back in 2021 – have already pledged their commitment to the existing competitions they play in, while the Premier League released a statement rejecting the Super League concept.

But Hateley feels the two Glasgow side's should work together to be part of the project.

Speaking to NewBettingsites.uk, he said: "The European Super League could definitely provide an opportunity for Rangers and Celtic to show their willingness to leave Scottish football, which in my opinion would make the Scottish Premiership better.

“For the SPL, the league becomes more competitive and that would bring more investment to different clubs.

"There would then be five or six different teams all in with a chance of winning the league. That would be better for the governing body to create more excitement around the league, attracting better commercial deals.

“For Rangers and Celtic, it would take them into a totally different ball game, making it easier for them to bring a higher level of players to the football club.

"Both joining the European Super League would be a win-win for Scottish football as well as for Rangers and Celtic.”

"A lot of stuff surrounding the European Super League is contractual between different governing bodies, and the FA seem to have it tied up so that English clubs can’t join it.

“I’m not so sure that the Scottish Football Association have those blocks in place. I think the European Super League could provide a different step forward for Rangers and Celtic in terms of leaving Scottish football.

"They would probably have to work together on it which I think could be difficult, but it would be for the benefit of both of the clubs to mix in with other European giants."
