The Kansas City Chiefs won their second straight Lombardi Trophy on Sunday night, beating the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, 25-22. The overtime thriller was Patrick Mahomes’ third championship in a five-year span, officially putting the Chiefs in the conversation as one of the greatest dynasties in league history.
Next season, the Chiefs will have a chance to do something no team in the NFL has ever accomplished. They’ll attempt to be the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row.
It may be surprising that the Steelers, 49ers, Cowboys or Patriots never won three championships in a row during their dominant stretches, but accomplishing a threepeat in any sport is incredibly difficult. The Chiefs will attempt to be the first to do it in the NFL.
With Mahomes at quarterback and Andy Reid returning as the head coach, the Chiefs have all the makings of a championship team next season. Travis Kelce still has two years left on his contract, too.
The last team in American sports to win three championships in a row was the Los Angeles Lakers, who won three straight NBA titles from 2000-2002. The New York Islanders were the last to do it in the NHL (1980-1983, four straight), while the New York Yankees were the last in MLB (1998-2000).
