Harvey Elliott may face anxious World Cup wait as England injury issue emerges

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott could yet realise his World Cup dream with Leicester City's James Maddison struggling with a hamstring injury he has been managing.

Maddison has sat out of England's training in Qatar for the past two days and is now set to miss the Three Lions' clash with Iran on Monday.

Gareth Southgate has until Sunday to decide whether he would like to replace Maddison in the 26-man squad as England look to try and win their second World Cup.

Elliott has brought energy, work rate and talent to the Liverpool midfield in what has been a difficult season for Jurgen Klopp's side so far.

90min report that Chelsea's Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Southampton's James Warde-Prowse would be the names at the top of Southgate's list, but Elliott could also be someone under consideration for the final place.

Sky Sports reported earlier this season that the Liverpool youngster was 'in the thoughts' of Southgate.
