Harvey Elliott insists ‘unbelievable’ England can go all the way at European Under-21 Championship

Harvey Elliott says England should settle for nothing less than winning the European Under-21 Championship due to the “unbelievable talent” in their squad.

The Young Lions face Portugal in the quarter-finals on Sunday having won all three of their group games for the first time in history.

England have not won the European Under-21 Championship since 1984, while they are in the knockout stages for only the fourth time since 1998.

They have won one of their four previous knockout ties, but Liverpool midfielder Elliott believes this current group can go all the way.

“We want to win,” said Elliott. “That’s our main aim, our only aim to be honest.

“We’ve got a massive group and a great bunch of lads, with unbelievable talent, so who says we can’t win.

“It’s just down to us to keep applying ourselves in games, keep taking this confidence into each and every game and think we can go out there and beat anyone - which we can. We just need to keep going.”

England had already qualified for the quarter-finals before their final group game against Germany on Wednesday and that allowed manager Lee Carsley to make eight changes.

He is expected to reverse those for Sunday, with Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe and Chelsea defender Levi Colwill two who are due to come back in.
