Harry Redknapp tipped to return as Tottenham manager after 'farcical' scenes

Harry Redknapp has been talked up for a return to Tottenham by Ally McCoist, with the pundit tipping the former Spurs boss to replace Christian Stellini after Sunday's calamitous 6-1 loss to Newcastle United.

The defeat saw Spurs down by five within the opening 21 minutes before second half goals from Callum Wilson and Harry Kane made the final score 6-1. It was a crucial match for both teams, with Spurs looking to stay in contention for the top four and the potential of Champions League qualification.

The loss means that Tottenham are now six points outside of the top four, with both Manchester United and Newcastle having games in hand to make qualification highly unlikely. They are now just two points ahead of Aston Villa in the table, with Brighton also in the mix, being four points behind and having three games in hand.

With matches against Liverpool and United up next, it could be a tough few weeks for the club and Stellini is set to remain charge until the end of the season. But former Scotland and Rangers striker Ally McCoist has called for former another caretaker to come in before the end of the season.

“I always want to give managers the biggest opportunity possible... but come on, something’s got to be done,” he told talkSPORT. “I know it sounds crazy but if you can’t get the man that you want, you’re going to have get another caretaker. I know it’s not ideal but the whole situation has become farcical.

“I’ve got unbelievable sympathy for the Tottenham supporters, has there ever been a club that underachieves and doesn’t win the things it should?"

When asked about his tip for the role, he said former boss Redknapp could be an option. “I actually think Harry wouldn’t have been a bad idea. Actually a good idea, he knows the club, knows the players," said McCoist.

“They just want a level of consistency and performance, the top four is away. They aren’t catchingUnited or Newcastle.

“Long-term, I don’t know. Are they going to go for Vincent Kompany, are they going to go for [Mauricio] Pochettino? But something has to be done. That yesterday, five-nothing down after 20 minutes. Dear me.”

Redknapp left the north London club eleven years ago after a four year spell between 2008 and 2012 brought Spurs back to the top level of English football. His biggest achievement was a Champions League quarter final in the 2010-11 season and he remains a popular figure.

However, he has not managed since leaving Birmingham City after an unsuccessful spell as boss in 2017 and it would be an unlikely move for the club. Current assistant Ryan Mason has taken the reins on an interim basis previously and would be a more obvious candidate for the role.

Spurs fans have sung the name of former manager Pochettino at recent matches, calling for the Argentine to be rehired three and a half years after leaving the club. However, he is not favourite to take over, with Burnley manager Vincent Kompany top of the bookmakers' list after a remarkable promotion winning season with Burnley.
