Harry Redknapp has opened up about the impact that his son Jamie Redknapp’s divorce had on their family, describing it as “difficult”.
The former football manager, 75, and wife Sandra, 74, made a vow to “never interfere” in Jamie’s split from his former wife, singer Louise, despite nobody being “used to” the idea of divorce.
Harry said that both his and Sandra’s parents were married until they passed away.
The couple spoke about their son and daughter-in-law's divorce, adding that while it was challenging, everyone has managed to stay on good terms.
Harry said: "It was difficult when Jamie and Louise got divorced because both sets of our parents were married until they died, so we weren't used to that."
Harry and Sandra, who recently published a book about their own enduring love story, also reflected on their own marriage and family life in the interview with The Times, and Sandra added: "I've tried to make life easy for him because his job has been so stressful.
"When we had babies, fathers didn't do a lot and Harry never changed a nappy. But he would take them for a walk in the pram to get them to sleep. When they became toddlers, he always had them with him."
Jamie and Louise’s 19-year marriage ended in 2017. Earlier this year, Louise revealed that she has yet to date anyone else, as her focus has been on her two sons, Charley, 18, and Beau, 13.
She spoke to HELLO! about what her life has been like in the years since her divorce, admitting it had a lasting impact on her and Jamie’s sons. She also referred to Jamie’s new relationship, with the former footballer going on to marry model Frida Andersson in October last year. The pair welcomed their first child, son Raphael, last November.
She said: "I've felt this as a mum and, to say this in the most sort of respectful way, my boys' lives changed dramatically and then it changed again when obviously Jamie got married and had a family.”
Speaking about her decision as to why she hasn’t dated anyone new since the split, Louise pointed out: "Their life changed and I felt like I needed to be their one staple.
"That's just something I think a lot of mums would feel."
Jamie and Frida recently celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary with a holiday, with the former writing on social media: "Perfect anniversary / birthday getaway last week with our little man."
