Harry Kane told he has no choice but to finally walk away from Tottenham this summer

William Gallas believes Harry Kane will leave Tottenham this summer because they are not currently challenging for silverware.

Manchester United are interested in signing the England captain, who turns 30 in July. Kane is still waiting to win a major trophy but wants to remain in England to snatch Alan Shearer's record of 260 Premier League goals, with the Spurs ace on 207 strikes.

Kane will enter the final year of his Tottenham contract this summer and finds himself at a crossroads, with his next contract is likely to be the last long-term deal of his career. Furthermore, Spurs will not want to lose him on a free transfer next summer.

Gallas, who played for Tottenham between 2010 and 2013, and was on the pitch when Kane made his Spurs debut, was asked by Genting Casino what he would do if he was in the forward's shoes.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender replied: "Harry Kane will go in the summer. Harry Kane has to go. He must go.

"I want Harry to have the experience of lifting a trophy. I want him to lift the Premier League trophy. Tottenham can’t give him that opportunity. Harry has never been a selfish guy; he has always done what is asked of him and has scored so many goals for the club.

"The club haven’t been able to give him what he wants. He has to leave. You can see after that performance [the 6-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday], it was a little bit embarrassing, for the players and the fans. The team defended poorly."

Kane endured one of his toughest days in a Tottenham shirt at the weekend when the team were mauled at St James' Park. The prolific forward did find the net, but the headlines were dominated by Newcastle scoring five goals inside 21 minutes.

Tottenham chair Daniel Levy responded to that result by sacking interim manager Cristian Stellini and replacing him with his assistant Ryan Mason. Stellini, who replaced his ex-boss Antonio Conte just a month ago, lasted only four games in charge.

Tottenham find themselves fifth in the Premier League, six points behind Man Utd in fourth having played two games more, with Aston Villa and Liverpool in pursuit. They also failed to go far in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Spurs have not won a trophy since their League Cup triumph in 2008. Since then, they have finished as runners-up in the Premier League, Champions League and League Cup (twice). Kane was part of the squad for those four near misses.

Man Utd are on the hunt for a new striker after allowing Cristiano Ronaldo to leave the club in November. It's believed they are ready to pay Kane £300,000-a-week to lure him to Old Trafford, which could be his only viable destination this summer.

Kane has also been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, but the Englishman wants Shearer's record. He said in March: "I'm getting closer, so it's for sure something I want to achieve. But I try not to look too far ahead in football."
