Harry Kane tipped to join Newcastle United to break Alan Shearer's record

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent believes Newcastle United could be serious contenders to sign Harry Kane. The England international has long been linked with a move away from Spurs, in his quest to win some silverware.

Newcastle's takeover last year made the Magpies the richest club in world football and would in theory be able to offer Kane a lucrative contract. However, both Eddie Howe and the owners have warned the rebuild at St. James' would be a steady one and there would be no spending beyond their means given the need to comply with financial fair play.

However, that hasn't stopped pundits speculating about big money moves given the Magpies' stellar start to the campaign. Howe's side are third in the Premier League at the time of writing, exceeding all expectations.

Bent told talkSPORT: “Do you know someone who could be in for him? It would be quite funny, quite fitting actually. Imagine Newcastle and go, ‘How about breaking Shearer’s record at Newcastle?'

"He's on 198 [goals] and he's coming up quickly on that [Shearer's record]. He is more than capable of hitting 30 in a season. Newcastle have certainly got the financial capabilities of bringing someone like Harry Kane in. They've got Callum Wilson - obviously injuries - but he's been brilliant.

"They've got Isak as well, but both of them are not as good as Kane even though Callum Wilson is fantastic, but they're just one that you have to take seriously now, first of all where they are in the league, but the finances to back it as well. They can go to places where other clubs will maybe go 'mmm no.'

"City will do it, Chelsea will get the chequebook out and go 'here you go have that.' But, he wouldn't go to Chelsea because Daniel Levy wouldn't allow it. Newcastle is an interesting one."
