Harry Kane joked that Arsenal fans have a “soft respect” for him after scoring against the Gunners for Bayern Munich.
The England captain rolled in a cool penalty to give the German giants the lead after Serge Gnabry had cancelled out Bukayo Saka’s opener.
Leandro Trossard eventually ensured Mikel Arteta’s side will take something to the Allianz Arena next week and the drama did not end there.
Saka was controversially denied a late penalty after he was brought down inside the box by Manuel Neuer during the dying embers of an enthralling contest.
The appeals were duly waved by Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg, who blew the whistle second afterwards. That sparked a furious reaction from the Arsenal fans, players and coaches, with Saka questioning the official after the whistle had blown.
Kane, who has enjoyed a fine debut season with Bayern despite their wider struggles, became the highest-scoring opposition player in the history of the Emirates Stadium. The penalty took him to six goals there and he was interviewed by the TNT Sports pundits after the game.
While conducting an interview, a group of home supporters chanted anti-Tottenham songs at Spurs’ all-time leading goalscorer, who joked: “I think they have a soft respect for me.”
Of his penalty, Kane said watching David Raya against Porto led him to decide to wait for the Arsenal goalkeeper to make the first move.
"It was one of them when I have done a bit of research of his games against Porto,” he said.
“It was nice to see him go early and make it easier for me."
The Gunners will travel to Munich for the away leg on Tuesday 16 April after they host Aston Villa on Sunday.
