Harry Kane reflects on ‘magical moment’ after breaking Jimmy Greaves’ Tottenham record

Harry Kane admitted it was a relief to finally score his 267th goal for Tottenham and break Jimmy Greaves’ record.

It has been a landmark regularly spoken about in recent weeks as Kane moved closer and eventually alongside Greaves, who for so long has been the club’s all-time top goalscorer.

But Kane now has that title for himself after netting the only goal in Spurs’ 1-0 win over Manchester City, his first-half strike proving enough as Tottenham moved to within a point of Newcastle in fourth.

The 29-year-old also become the third player in Premier League history to score 200 goals in the competition, and has reached that milestone in fewer games than Alan Shearer or Wayne Rooney.

“It’s a day I’ll never forget,” Kane told Sky Sports. “It’s hard to put into words - just a magical moment.

“I was desperate to do it with a win as well, and in front of the home fans. There’s been so much talk about it in the last two weeks and I wanted to get it done as soon as possible.

“To do it here against one of the best teams in the world, it’s a special feeling.

“When I started playing regularly, eight or nine years ago, it wasn’t even in my imagination to score 200 Premier League goals. To be there now, it’s exciting and I’ve got plenty more years left, so hopefully there’s a few more to come.”

Kane’s first Premier League goal came in 2014 against Sunderland, when Tim Sherwood was in charge of Spurs, and he has been a regular at the top of the League’s goalscoring charts since then.

There has been speculation over Kane’s future in recent years, with Man City strongly linked with a move for the striker, but it is clear how much staying at the club and breaking Greaves’ record has meant to the England captain.

“Tim Sherwood gave me my first start, and I was so desperate to make an impression,” Kane said.

“To score and win that game was just the start. There’s been a lot of hard work since then with Mauricio and all the coaches. It’s a magical feeling.

“Jimmy Greaves is a complete hero, one of the best strikers to ever play the game, so to even be in that company is special. I’m sure his family will be proud as well. Overall, a really good night.”
